Russia Slams UNSC failure to Act on Palestine; Vows to Continue

UNSC

2015 is shaping up to be a doozy!

Russia has warned that the United Nations Security Council’s failure to approve a draft resolution demanding the recognition of an independent Palestinian state could plunge the Middle East into insecurity and violence.

“The inaction of the Security Council in this area dooms the situation to a dangerous status quo which we cannot accept. One chance for hope is not enough. We must continue,” Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said.

The Russian diplomat expressed regret over the UN’s rejection of the resolution, describing it as a “strategic mistake.”

Watch the news report showing the Ambassador’s statements here.

The resolution needed to secure at least nine votes to be passed by the 15-member body. Eight voted in favor, including France, Russia and China, and two against while there were five abstentions, among them the UK. The US and Australia voted against the resolution.

Even though the US vetoes every initiative, that’s a razor thin defeat. In fact, had Nigeria not abstained (and the US not vetoed), Palestine would have prevailed. Times are changing and next year promises to be tumultuous.

  1. I don’t understand. If the states that voted to allow Palestine statehood wanted that to happen why not just accept it as a done deal and start dealing with the Palestinian state on an individual basis. Tell the UN to screw themselves. Trade with them, set up embassies, start treating them as part of the human race.
