A company called Momentum Machines has built a robot that could radically change the fast-food industry and have some line cooks looking for new jobs. The company’s robot can “slice toppings like tomatoes and pickles immediately before it places the slice onto your burger, giving you the freshest burger possible.” The robot is “more consistent, more sanitary, and can produce ~360 hamburgers per hour.” That’s one burger every 10 seconds.
The next generation of the device will offer “custom meat grinds for every single customer. Want a patty with 1/3 pork and 2/3 bison ground to order? No problem.”
The company claims the increased productivity will translate into lower prices for better burgers and the loss of burger flipping jobs will mean restaurants can expand into new areas of business and hire more people. But that seems like a long shot if not absolutely unlikely. Since when has increased productivity led to anything other than more profits for the already uber wealthy? Almost never.
Wakeup up, America. The burger bots are coming, to take your jobs and to make burgers you can no longer afford.
All I can think of is the movie “Modern Times” and the feeding machine with Charlie Chaplin as the “test subject”. Keeping this burger machine clean would be next to impossible. What if something undesired, (like a rat) enters the machine? I could get my dream job combining engineering & counseling. Hey dude, there is a roach in my burger! I know several people @ the local fast food places here. Most are very nice & I enjoy talking to them. I have observed that one chain with arches has seemly upset and depressed workers. I bet they would love the bots. So different than the one with the little girl. Nice story.

Interesting, but I can’t eat 360 burgers an hour. I guess we’ll have to share with the hungry and homeless, elderly, and outcast. Let’s set one of these up in the poorest places in the world. Burger Bots: get your free burger.
